Matthew 10:14-15 (New International Version)
14If anyone will not welcome you or listen to your words, shake the dust off your feet when you leave that home or town. 15I tell you the truth, it will be more bearable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the day of judgment than for that town.
Why is He so harsh about it? There are plenty of people who reject Jesus.

Also, it would be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah on the Day of Judgement because though the people of Sodom were immoral, they had no knowledge of God, whereas the Israelites did.
The Jews were God's chosen people, they had the covenant, they had God's prophecies about the Messiah, and yet the majority of them did not accept Jesus as the Messiah. At the resurrection all people, including the sodomites, will have the chance to learn of the blessing of the Kingdom and have the chance for everlasting life. God looks at the heart, and perhaps as Brother Russell said it would be easier for the people of Sodom to make progress during the millenial age than for those who did not accept Jesus and his disciples.
