Matthew 15:5-6 (New International Version)
5But you say that if a man says to his father or mother, 'Whatever help you might otherwise have received from me is a gift devoted to God,' 6he is not to 'honor his father[a]' with it. Thus you nullify the word of God for the sake of your tradition.
It appears that the Pharisees had developed a way around the biblical requirement that one take care of one's parents in their old age.
One could give declare an intent to give one's wealth to the temple at death and retain the right to use said wealth for one's own needs until one's passing. Such a delayed donation effectively removed the wealth from other claims or obligations on it, such as the obligation to provide for one's parents. Thus one could be quite selfish and still seen as an upstanding member of the Jewish community.
Jesus rightly condemned the Pharisees for their hypocrisy in that matter.
|
