Exodus 3:5-6 (King James Version)
5And he said, Draw not nigh hither: put off thy shoes from off thy feet, for the place whereon thou standest is holy ground.
6Moreover he said, I am the God of thy father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. And Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.
Asking Moses to remove an article of clothing allowed Moses to transition from being in a normal setting to a Holy setting.
God could just as easily aasked him to remove his cloak, bathe, or do something else to honor the moment.
Muslims remove their shoes when they enter their Mosques because of this passage.
Jacob's encounter with God is interesting in a similar way, Gen.28:18+
