Exodus 17:14 (King James Version)

14And the LORD said unto Moses, Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: for I will utterly put out the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven.

Why does Joshua have to hear?

Exodus 17:8 Then Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim.
Exodus 17:9 Moses said to Joshua, "Choose men for us, and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with God's rod in my hand.
Exodus 17:10 So Joshua did as Moses had told him, and fought with Amalek; and Moses, Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill.
Exodus 17:11 It happened, when Moses held up his hand, that Israel prevailed; and when he let down his hand, Amalek prevailed.
Exodus 17:12 But Moses' hands were heavy; and they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. Aaron and Hur held up his hands, the one on the one side, and the other on the other side. His hands were steady until sunset.
Exodus 17:13 Joshua defeated Amalek and his people with the edge of the sword.
Exodsu 17:14 Yahweh said to Moses, "Write this for a memorial in a book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua: that I will utterly blot out the memory of Amalek from under the sky." -- World English

Yahweh, I am sure, had foreknowledge that Joshua was become the leader of Israel after Moses' death. It is not clear that Joshua knew the connection with his victory over Amalek with what Moses had done, and thus it is possible that this needed to be rehearsed in his ears. I believe that it is also possible that rehearsing this incident in the ears of Joshua would leave an imprint in Joshua's memory of how Yahweh can deliver, thus providing courage for Joshua in the days to come, which could be passed on the people of Israel. -- Deuteronomy 31:17,23; Joshua 10:25.

Christian love,
Ronald
